Centennial’s “The Big Race” wins IABC Gold Quill Award

Gold Quill Awards 2014 logoCentennial College’s “The Big Race” — a collaboration project between public relations and broadcasting & film students — has won a Gold Quill Award from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC)The Gold Quill Awards celebrate excellence in global communications and attract entries from all over the world. The Big Race won an Award of Merit in the Audio Visual category.

The Big Race grew out of a school-wide competition called “10.10.10” in the School of Communications, Media & Design focused on the connection between social issues and access to transit.  Students had to collaborate with at least one other program to implement their idea.  The result was The Big Race, an eight-part web series that followed three competitors racing around Toronto using public transit.  Developed with the support of Metrolinx and Civic Action, The Big Race debuted at Civic Action’s Our Region, Our Move conference in April 2013.

“This project showcased the power of applied learning with collaboration that is key to what we do here at Centennial,” says Donna Lindell, faculty advisor, The Big Race.  “We’re thrilled for our PR and B&F students to be recognized on an international stage for their work on this project.”

The Gold Quill Award will be presented to The Big Race team at the IABC World Conference in Toronto on June 9, 2014.  Visit The Big Race Blog to view the entire series and learn more about the project.
