Centennial’s Public Relations and Corporate Communications program sweeps awards season (again)
The CPRS (Canadian Public Relations Society) Toronto chapter awarded its annual ACE Awards on May 4 and Centennial College PR students once again swept the student category winning two awards for “Student PR Communications Plan of the Year.”
Why does Centennial continue to take home all of the student awards? Centennial has a philosophy of creating real world projects with actual clients that students can use to develop their portfolios. This kind of experiential learning helps students gain practical experience they need to get a job and gain access to connections in the workforce.
One of the winning student communications plans this year was for the event “Up All Night”. This is a partnership with the students at Centennial’s Story Arts Centre campus and CivicAction, focused on creating a campaign centred around mental health in the workplace. Students researched and created the communications strategy and plan and then executed the elements of the plan at a 12-hour all-night event. The event was a huge success, raising $3000 to go towards a Friendship Bench and receiving media coverage on CBC Radio, Global News and Breakfast Television.
The other award went to a group of students for “Know the Signs”. This was an awareness campaign for employers to understand the signs of mental health, elements of which were executed in the Up All Night event, including the idea to raise funds for a Friendship Bench, which will be installed on the campus of the Story Arts Centre in September.
When Centennial wins industry awards, it solidifies its reputation as the best public relations and corporate communications post-graduate program in Ontario, capable of meeting industry standards and expectations for award-winning work. For students, receiving an award in front of industry professionals is a great way to stand out to potential employers and a great opportunity for networking.
