CC & PR students win 10.10.10 Competition with “The Amazing Transit Race”
An idea that would have teams racing across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton regions on public transit is the winner of Centennial College’s 10.10.10 Competition. “The Amazing Transit Race” would raise awareness of the difficulties for commuters on low income, who have disabilities, or who speak a language other than English.
The winning team of six Corporate Communications and Public Relations students also proposed that their race would be made into a series of four 8-minute webisodes, totaling 32 minutes, which corresponds with GTA Civic Action’s Your 32 Campaign.
“So the question is, What Would You Do With 32?” asked student presenter Meaghan Savage.
The 10.10.10 competition was featured in the Toronto Star on February 1, 2013. It reflects the emphasis on real-life learning that is a hallmark of Centennial’s Corporate Communications & Public Relations program, and the focus on collaboration across all programs in the School of Communications, Media & Design.
Ten teams presented as part of an extreme media competition judged by representatives from the GTA Civic Action, Metrolinx and Centennial’s Centre for Organizational Learning and Teaching.
The competition, named 10.10.10 because 10 student team from disciplines such as advertising, interactive design and public relations had 10 school days starting January 10 to generate ideas and proposals that connect the much-talked-about issues of public transit and social justice.
Each of the 10 teams today had 10 minutes to present their ideas to Mathew Bertin, Community and Stakeholder Relations Specialist at Metrolinx, Mitzie Hunter, CEO of GTA Civic Action Alliance and Gabriel Bedard, Global Citizenship & Equity Portfolio Learning Advisor, Centre for Organizational Learning and Teaching, Centennial College.
